Tip
Burghsluis Oostbout (45B), like Burghsluis West (45A), is situated close to the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier. Due to its proximity to the storm surge barrier, the influence of the North Sea is greater here than elsewhere. This results in an exceptional diversity of species. Sea anemones, felt-tube anemones, mud anemones and brick anemones can be found here in large numbers. This is also a spot where rare sea slugs and horned blennies can be spotted. The walk from the car park to the steps at the end of the breakwater is a challenging one. From the steps, you dive towards the tip of the breakwater in the south-west and back to the steps. In the shallower areas, you’ll mainly find rocks and oyster beds; deeper down, you’ll encounter a beautifully overgrown, steeply sloping wall. This runs parallel to the breakwater. The proximity to the storm surge barrier also means this is a site for more experienced divers. As you’re diving close to the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier, visibility here can be poorer and the current strong. Only dive here at low-tide turn. After the high-tide turn, the current can carry you towards the storm surge barrier. Therefore, never dive here at high tide.
