Tip

Wemeldinge West (68) is also known as the Anemone Field. You dive here from the shore. You enter the water at dyke post 1593. This is easier at high tide than at low tide, and you’ll also have the best visibility at this spot at high tide. Once underwater, you can dive over the basalt rocks to a depth of 30 metres before the sandy seabed begins. The basalt rocks are colourfully covered with sponges and brick anemones, which is where the name ‘Anemone Field’ comes from. During your dive, you may come across lobsters, crabs, hermit crabs, pipefish and even seahorses. During cuttlefish season, cuttlefish are regularly spotted here. Right next to Wemeldinge West lies the dive site Galjoen Zonder Poen (68A). Here, you enter the water from the shore via the steps and swim northwards. The wreck of the Galjoen Zonder Poen lies a 5-minute swim from the coast at a depth of around 25 metres. This is a dive where you’ll need to navigate carefully so as not to miss the wreck. It’s best to dive here at low tide, as the wreck is shallower then, and the better visibility makes it easier to find. The wreck is already being swallowed up by the sand. Nevertheless, it’s still clearly recognisable as a ship. The bow and frames are beautifully overgrown and support an enormous diversity of marine life. The dive sites near Wemeldinge are also popular with anglers. Be aware of any abandoned fishing lines and make sure you have your diving knife with you. If you dive deeper here, you’ll be close to or within the shipping channel. Do not perform a free ascent here and always use a deco buoy.
