When to dive: tides and slack water

In the Oosterschelde and along the North Sea, the tide decides when you can dive. Just before and after high or low water the current almost stops: slack water. That is the calmest moment, and usually visibility is best then too.

Slack water does not always coincide with high or low water in the tide table: because of the shape of a channel or dam, the current at a site can turn 10 to 50 minutes later. That is why every site in Planjeduik has its own time correction. Around spring tide (new and full moon) currents are strongest, around neap tide they are calmest.
